How to Prepare Stems for Mixing or Mastering

When you send stems to a mix or mastering engineer, the quality of that export directly affects how much time is spent fixing technical issues versus actually making creative decisions. This is a practical, step-by-step checklist to make sure your stems arrive clean, organized, and ready to work with.

1. Export Each Stem at Full Length, From the Same Start Point

Every stem should start at the exact same timecode (usually 0:00 or the very beginning of the session) and run for the full length of the song, including silence where a track isn't playing. Never trim a stem to only the section where it's active — this breaks alignment and forces the engineer to manually re-sync everything.

2. Bounce Stems Pre-Fader, Without Master Bus Processing

Stems should reflect the individual track's own processing (its own EQ, compression, or creative effects you want kept) but should not include anything on the master bus — no master EQ, no master compression, no master limiter. Sending stems with master processing baked in makes it impossible for the mix or mastering engineer to work with a clean, unprocessed overall balance.

3. Leave Headroom — Don't Push Levels to 0 dBFS

Each stem's peak level should sit comfortably below 0 dBFS, ideally with peaks around ‑6 dB. This isn't about loudness — it's about giving the engineer room to work without clipping when tracks are combined. A common mistake is trying to make stems "loud" before sending them; this actively makes the engineer's job harder.

4. Use Consistent Sample Rate and Bit Depth

All stems should be exported at the same sample rate and bit depth as your original session (commonly 44.1kHz or 48kHz, 24-bit). Mixing stems with different sample rates in one project can cause syncing issues and unnecessary quality loss from resampling.

5. Name Every File Clearly and Consistently

A file named "Audio_47.wav" tells the engineer nothing. Use clear, consistent naming: 01_Lead_Vocal.wav, 02_Backing_Vocals.wav, 03_Kick.wav, 04_Snare.wav, 05_Bass.wav. Number them to preserve the intended track order, and use the same naming pattern across the whole song.

6. Include a Reference Mix

Always send a rough mix or reference bounce alongside the stems — even an imperfect one. This shows the engineer your creative intent: which elements you want prominent, the general vibe and balance you're going for. Without a reference, they're working blind on artistic decisions that should be informed by your vision.

7. Remove Unused Tracks and Automation Mistakes

Before exporting, mute or delete any tracks that aren't part of the final song (scratch takes, unused alternate vocals, reference tracks) so the engineer isn't sorting through clutter. Double-check that volume or pan automation didn't leave accidental jumps or mutes in the final bounce.

8. Compress Files Into One Organized Folder

Package all stems into a single folder, clearly named with the artist and song title, and compress it into a ZIP file before sending. This avoids missing files, broken folder structures, or stems getting lost across multiple messages or emails.
